For Colby Masters, earning a degree from Augusta University was more than a milestone. It was the beginning of a journey that combined academic learning, hands-on experience, and professional development.
Colby graduated from Augusta University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. Throughout his time at AU, he took opportunities that helped transform classroom knowledge into practical skills, preparing him for a successful career.
Learning Inside the Georgia Cyber Center
One of the most impactful parts of Colby’s education was taking classes in the Georgia Cyber Center. The facility provided access to cutting-edge technology and an environment designed to encourage collaboration and innovation.
“The classes in the Georgia Cyber Center provided an outstanding learning environment with state-of-the-art technology and hands-on experiences,” Colby said. “Being surrounded by faculty, industry professionals, and fellow students who shared a passion for cybersecurity created a collaborative atmosphere that encouraged learning and professional growth.”
The combination of up to date resources, expert faculty, and engaged peers gave Colby opportunities to increase his technical knowledge while learning how cybersecurity works in real-world environments.
Gaining Real-World Experience in the Security Operations Center
While completing his degree, Colby worked as a Governance, Risk, and Compliance Analyst in the Security Operations Center (SOC) at the Georgia Cyber Center.
His role provided valuable exposure to professional cybersecurity operations and allowed him to apply concepts learned in the classroom to real security challenges.
“My experience at the Security Operations Center was incredibly rewarding,” Colby said. “I worked alongside experienced cybersecurity professionals, developed both technical and analytical skills, and gained valuable insight into real security operations.”
Working with professionals in the field helped him build confidence, strengthen his analytical abilities, and better understand the day-to-day responsibilities of cybersecurity teams.
Building Skills That Last Beyond Graduation
According to Colby, his experience in the Security Operations Center helped him develop skills that continue to impact his career today.
The role taught him how to work effectively within a professional team, communicate with stakeholders, solve problems under pressure, and understand how security operations function within an organization. It also reinforced the importance of documentation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
These experiences helped bridge the gap between academics and industry, giving him a clear understanding of workplace expectations before graduation.
The Value of Mentorship and Professional Connections
Beyond technical skills, Colby credits the mentors and connections he developed through the Georgia Cyber Center with helping him prepare for life after college.
“The mentors and professional connections I made through the Georgia Cyber Center were instrumental in preparing me for my career,” he said. “Their guidance, encouragement, and industry insight helped me build the confidence and experience needed to pursue full-time opportunities.”
The relationships he built provided valuable advice, industry perspectives, and encouragement as he began navigating his career path.
Launching a Career at UPS
Today, Colby works as a System Review Specialist at UPS, where he combines technology, operations, and data analysis to support business performance.
In his role, he helps identify system issues, analyze operational data, and work with technology teams to improve processes across large-scale business environments.
“I’m happy with where I am because the position allows me to continue building my analytical and problem-solving skills while working for a global technology-driven organization,” Colby said.
The position provides opportunities to continue growing professionally while applying many of the skills he developed during his time at Augusta University.
Standing Out as a Candidate
Colby believes his experience in the Security Operations Center gave him a significant advantage during interviews and the hiring process.
“Having real-world experience before graduating allowed me to speak confidently during interviews and demonstrate practical skills beyond classroom assignments,” he said. “It helped me stand out as a candidate and made the transition into a full-time role much smoother.”
The ability to discuss real projects and workplace experiences helped differentiate him from other applicants and demonstrated his readiness to contribute immediately in a professional setting.

Looking Ahead
As he continues his professional journey, Colby has ambitious goals for the future.
In five years, he hopes to advance further in technology and cybersecurity by taking on greater responsibilities and leadership opportunities. He also plans to pursue additional industry certifications, expand his technical expertise, and contribute to projects that strengthen both security and business operations.
A Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Outside of work, Colby remains committed to continuous learning, a quality that has been central to his success.
He enjoys staying current with emerging technologies through platforms like TryHackMe and by pursuing professional certifications. For Colby, one of the most exciting aspects of cybersecurity is that there is always something new to learn.
“Cybersecurity is constantly evolving,” he said. “I enjoy challenging myself to keep learning new skills.”
