For Mathias Perrin, cybersecurity wasn’t just something he studied.
It was something he lived every day inside the Security Operations Center (SOC) at the Georgia Cyber Center at Augusta University.
A 2024 graduate of Augusta University with a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, he turned classroom knowledge into real-world experience early on. That hands-on learning made all the difference.
Learning in a Real-World Environment
Mathias describes his time taking classes inside the Georgia Cyber Center as “incredible,” pointing to the immersive environment that sets the experience apart.
Instead of a traditional classroom, students train in a space designed to mirror a real cybersecurity watch floor. Surrounded by industry professionals and experienced faculty, Mathias and his peers weren’t just learning concepts. They were learning how those concepts play out in real time.
Building Skills That Last
As a Student Cybersecurity Analyst in the Augusta University Security Operations Center, Mathias gained experience that shaped both his technical abilities and his mindset.
“My experience as a Student Analyst at the AU SOC was instrumental in my professional development,” he said. “I wouldn’t be the analyst I am today without it.”
Beyond tools and systems, one of the most valuable skills he developed was the ability to analyze situations and make informed decisions. It’s a skill he still relies on daily.
From identifying phishing attempts at work to helping protect his family from online scams, the lessons he learned extend far beyond the SOC.
Mentorship That Opens Doors
Mathias credits strong mentorship as a key part of his success, especially the guidance he received from Director of Cybersecurity, Rodd Arthur.
From sharing job opportunities to hosting guest speakers, reviewing resumes and conducting mock interviews, that support helped prepare him for the transition into the workforce.
That preparation paid off.
Launching a Career in Cybersecurity
Today, Mathias works in cybersecurity for the federal government, a role he describes as the best job he’s ever had.
“The people, the job, and the benefits are exceptional,” he said.
More importantly, he felt ready from day one.
“I came into this role fully prepared thanks to the training I had at the SOC,” he said. “I’ve learned that knowing certain tools isn’t as important as the skill of analysis and determination.”
While he’s quick to stay humble about comparisons, Mathias notes that his SOC experience gave him a strong foundation and confidence in areas where others are still learning.
Looking Ahead
Mathias isn’t done yet. In the next five years, he hopes to return to Augusta, continue his career and begin working toward a master’s degree at Augusta University.
It’s a full-circle moment that reflects both his growth and his connection to the place where it all started.
