For Collin Talley, getting started in cybersecurity was not just about earning a degree. It was about gaining real experience, learning from the right people and finding a place that pushed him to grow.

Finding His Path at the Georgia Cyber Center

Collin graduated from Augusta University in May 2024 with a degree in Cybersecurity and is now working toward his Master of Science in Information Security Management through Augusta University Online.

During his time as a student, classes held inside the Georgia Cyber Center made a lasting impact.

“They were great,” Collin said. “The environment encouraged me to excel in my classes and made for a great place to study and network.”

He credits both the atmosphere and the faculty for helping him stay motivated and focused on his goals.

“The professors were all very capable and helped prepare me while also keeping me inspired to join the workforce,” he said. “They gave me insight into what I wanted to accomplish in my career and what steps I needed to take to get there.”

Learning by Doing in the AU SOC

Collin took that classroom experience a step further through a year-long internship at the AU Security Operations Center, where he worked as a Student Cybersecurity Analyst.

There, he and his team helped protect the networks of Augusta University, AU Health and Wellstar. It was his first real look at what a career in cybersecurity could be.

“It provided an extremely solid foundation for my career,” he said. “I could not have asked for better leadership or fellow interns.”

He points to mentors like Daniel Punches and Rodd Arthur as key influences during that time.

“They helped me learn, prepare for the workforce and even shared job opportunities,” Collin said. “I still think about how grateful I am to have worked with such a great team.”

That experience paid off quickly. Before graduating, Collin secured six job offers, something he directly connects to his time in the SOC.

The role also helped him land his first position as a Triage Analyst supporting work at NASA Johnson Space Center.

“The experience at the SOC lined up perfectly with my work role and responsibilities,” he said.

With guidance from mentors and support from his peers, Collin felt prepared to step into the workforce and succeed from day one.

Building a Career That Matters

Now in his career, Collin says he feels both happy and fulfilled in the work he is doing.

“I truly feel like I have already been able to make a difference and have been able to work alongside some very impressive people,” he said.

Looking ahead, he plans to continue building his career in cybersecurity and growing in the field.

A Strong Start in Cybersecurity

Collin’s story is a reminder that the right mix of education, experience and mentorship can open doors quickly.

Through opportunities at the Georgia Cyber Center and Augusta University, students are not just learning cybersecurity. They are stepping into it with real skills, real experience and real confidence.
